Max Scherzer kept his cool after losing perfect game, finishes with first career no-no.
When the baseball world woke up today, no one thought they’d hear news of a no hitter. Granted its only been 11 days since the last no hitter was thrown, which was by the San Francisco Giants own, Chris Heston. They don’t happen often and once a pitcher starts to flirt with a no hitter, its certainly not talked about. Superstition is fully alive in the MLB, and no one wants to be the guy to jinx a no hitter or perfect game. More than 100 years of stats being kept in the MLB, and there has been 289 recorded no hitters. They are one of the most rarest and well respected occurrences, so once its accomplished its cherished for a whole lifetime. Happening at best once or twice a season, it’s a pitchers dream and a batters nightmare. Luckily enough as we were, today we were able to witness a high caliber pitcher add another accolade to an elite career.
If you have watched any baseball the past few season, Max Scherzer is a household name to you. There’s no introduction necessary for the 2013 Cy Young winner, he is an ace and he knows it. Today he was slated to start against a Pittsburgh Pirates team who have gone 13-5 in the month of June. They ended up being an easy task for the 7 year vet, mowing down 10 in 9 innings pitched. Certainly Scherzer started the day just trying to seal up another win for his ball club. He wasn’t thinking of throwing a perfect game into the 9th inning, eventually ending up with a no hitter, but little did he know 2 hours and 12 minutes later, he would be apart of history.
Below, Max Scherzer talks to the media on the heels of his first career no-hitter. The Nats topped the Pirates 6-0. Scherzer has gone the distance in each of his last two starts and has struck out 26 batters along the way. You can also see a few photo highlights in the gallery below.
