Typically a “bonus” mode in previous CoD titles, this year’s Zombies mode has enough features to be its own separate disc (but somehow they managed to fit it all in one). Running off of the Black Ops 2 multiplayer engine, you or up to 4 team mates load up and get to killing in 3 different modes: Tranzit, Survival & Grief.
Tranzit mode is as close as a “campaign” mode we’re going to get, as you chose to roam the expansive zombie world by foot or bus (solo or 4 player co-op), each having its advantages and disadvantages. In this mode, players can collect pieces they find throughout the world to create “buildables” like weapons and such, to aid in the team’s survival.
The Survival mode is the traditional zombie killing that we’re used to, as you and up to 3 other players fortify your environments, get your ammo, patch the holes and try to survive as many waves of glowing-eyed zombies as you can.
The last mode is called Grief. In grief mode, up to EIGHT players can take part in this survival mode, where it’s basically 3 teams: 4 humans vs. 4 humans vs. the zombies. The goal in this mode is for your team to outlive the opposing human team. Human players can’t kill human players, only zombies. However, you can block paths, rooms and parts of the Tranzit world, making survival situations a little rough for the opposing team. And no, we don’t think the zombies give a shit about who’s on what team. It’s survival of the fittest in these post-apocalyptic streets! Zombies also packs new features this year, including stat tracking, leaderboards, and even an option to create custom games.
