Why Hasn’t Rockstar Made A GTA Movie?

After years of success, we wondering why Take-Two has yet to release a Grand Theft Auto movie. Creating a game is one thing, but movie making also? President Karl Staloff spoke earlier this week with at the BMO Capital Conference to discuss licensing the rights for a film that could be lucrative, but also examples of the risks associated with transforming a video game franchise to the big screen.

“If you’re going to invest in a movie, you can make a lot of money on movies; but as a licensor, you’ve got to look at what the success rate is, what the movie has to do for you to generate substantial economics that are worth taking the risk. So if it’s a bad movie, does that hurt your franchise or not? There is always a balance that has to be struck there. Obviously, we consider those inbound requests and take those inbound requests. So it’s something we consider at this point, but again it’s not core to what we do.”

His precautions on keeping the franchise alive are more appealing to him, then a movie that could fail if it’s not handled properly. Being the 2nd biggest third party game on the market, why risk the franchise? Yes money is the motive, but as we can clearly see, GTA franchise isn’t going anywhere for a long time. Fans do want a movie that involves at least one of their favorite GTA characters, as hopefully in the near future it could be spoken into existence.
