How can a “Late Night” show move to Netflix? We’ll soon find out.
After announcing she would be leaving E! and campaigning to join CBS for it’s late night slot, it looks as if Chelsea Handler has found a new home starting in 2016. It’s in the most unusual of places, Netflix.
While terms of the deal are not exactly clear, word is the streaming service is looking to experiment with the late night TV model and might not even use the old-fashioned strategy to garner success for her. How else would you keep a real-time TV show afloat on an on-demand video service? You probably can’t. That’s where you have to think outside the box and create a new format.
As part of the deal, Chelsea will also get her own comedy stand-up special in October of 2015 and take part in “docu-comedy” segments next year.
No more details have been released as of yet, but don’t count Netflix out to have something up their sleeve. At the end of the day, ratings or competing with Jimmy Fallon, Kimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert won’t matter as much as you’d think. As long as she’s a hit on Netflix and helps keep customers on their service, it will be a win-win situation.
