Justice League out next month!
Since 2013, Warner Bros. has slowly begun the first phase of their new DC Extended Universe, with films like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad. However, following the releases of their team-up films last year, that didn’t gain high praise from critics, DC Comics struck gold over the summer with the simplistic release of Wonder Woman.
This caused both companies to take examine their future and take things slower heading forward; which in our opinion can help them at least challenge the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a few years. In comparison to having multiple sequels, teased spin-offs and various team-up films connected within the DCEU; DC is now looking to revise their plans in the immediate future.
In an interview with Vulture, D.C.E. president Diane Nelson said, “Our intention, certainly, moving forward, is using the continuity to help make sure nothing is diverging in a way that doesn’t make sense. But there’s no insistence upon an overall story line or interconnectivity in that universe.”
So, this means that DC will now focus on stand-alone films within the DCU and leave the DCEU alone for the time being. That doesn’t mean that Suicide Squad 2 isn’t still being filmed; but taking time to introduce actors and tell their stories is best for building a foundation of the system.
DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns also spoke about the upcoming Aquaman film next year, saying it’ll be a stand-alone effort like Wonder Woman. He went to say, “The movie’s not about another movie. Some of the movies do connect the characters together, like Justice League. But, like with Aquaman, our goal is not to connect Aquaman to every movie.”
