HBO Cancels Bill Simmons’ “Any Given Wednesday”

The final episode of Any Given Wednesday will air on November 9, officially ending Bill Simmons‘ reign on the cable network, at least for now. HBO has decided to part ways with this venture, but have publicly said they still want to work with him in the future.

Simmons had this to say about the cancellation,

“One of the many reasons I joined HBO was to see if we could create a show built around smart conversations for sports fans and pop culture junkies. We loved making that show, but unfortunately it never resonated with audiences like we hoped. And that’s on me. But I love being a part of HBO’s family and look forward to innovating with them on other ambitious programming ideas over these next several years – both for the network and for digital. With that said, I want to thank the dedicated staff that worked so diligently with me behind the scenes to make this show every week – we hired so many great and talented people and I loved having them in my life. It’s difficult for me to imagine not working with them anymore.”

With ratings down and not enough viewers tuning in, it was only a matter of time until HBO pulled the plug. We rocked with the show, but it didn’t seem like Bill had the firepower to keep us intrigued. He wasn’t asking about any headline raising topics and every subject that was brought up had to involve Boston sports somehow. There was some good talk in the mix, though.

It seems like fans are used to outlandish debates and have grown accustomed to getting angry at what people say more than to listen to calm sports talk, which was what Bill was trying to do.
