Throughout the span of season two of HBO’s True Detective, every TV blog was talking about how disappointing the season was going and how the story was headed nowhere, but we didn’t want to believe it. I kept watching, trying to ignore what the critics were saying. Shit, season one was so good that I had hope that things would turn around.
But as the episodes moved along, it seemed like there was something missing. There were no real cliffhangers after you finished watching each week, with the exception of the gun fight and maybe the second to last episode of the season. Most of the time, you were left with more questions than answers. Compare that to a show like Game of Thrones, where every week is extra lit and this season of True Detective felt a little empty.
Last night’s season finale did a good job of tying up loose ends, but there were so many players involved in Casper’s murder that it was so confusing to know who was who up until the end. People that showed up only a few times throughout the season, all the sudden become the main players in the finale, and you’re left wondering where the fuck they were the whole time.
While the last two episodes of the season were probably the best, in retrospect, it probably seems more fitting that they would have cut the show down to six episodes and made it a mini series.
That whole Frank and his wife plot was not necessary. They should have showed Paul Woodrugh’s wife in more scenes. The Velcoro and his son story was touching and all, but it could have been left out. All in all, it feels like they stretched out the season for more episodes than it actually needed, making it a bit confusing to follow for the 10 it lasted.
Did anyone believe Vince Vaughn as a stone cold gangster? You know that Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams love relationship that lasted all but two episodes was a little weird.
Ultimately, it wasn’t a bad season of TD, by any means. It just wasn’t as captivating as the first. At least for me. It did seem a bit of a let down. But maybe that’s my fault for letting the hype get too real and expecting so much out of it.
But what did you think of this season of True Detective and/or the finale last night? Did it live up to what you thought at the beginning? Did you hate watch it like some folks?
