Beyond The Lights
A few months ago at the Toronto International Film Festival, we were introduced to Gina Prince-Bythewood’s romantic comedy film, Beyond the Lights. The motion picture stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Minnie Driver, Nate Parker, Danny Glover and Machine Gun Kelly and is themed from what we’re assuming a true story of events that happened. Gugu assumes the role of Noni Jean, a new artist that’s just won her first ever Billboard Music Award, without an album out. Prior to meeting police officer Kaz Nicols (Nate), she’s having a difficult time with adjusting to stardom and is destined for a downward spiral due to constant pressure (see: Hov & Bey’s “Hollywood”).
With Kaz aspiring to have a political career in the future, the two help build each other up when most needed. After friends and love ones tell them to avoid each other to keep focus on careers, the pair needs one another to give each other courage heading forward in life. This isn’t a traditional romantic comedy most would expect, but we expect fans to give this a second glance for the coming days.
