Self/less
From a promotional and presentation standpoint, one of our more anticipated films this month was Self/less. Unfortunately the reviewers haven’t been nice to the Tarsem Singh-directed project, which has us skeptical on taking 2 hours out of our busy weekend for a quick rush to theaters and watch. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Ben Kingsley, Matthew Goode, and Michelle Dockery, the new sci-fi thriller film focuses on a wealthy aristocrat by the name of Damian who wants to live out his Charles Lee Ray dreams (see: Child’s Play series). Dying from cancer, Damian transfers his soul into the body of a healthy young man through a medical procedure called shedding.
The new Damian, now as Edward, he finds out the origins of the new body’s original life through his time relocated to New Orleans. Now portraying the True Detective, Damian isn’t the master of his universe anymore and must go behind the confidential government plan to clear his plagued mind of disturbing images. The storyline may seem a bit much for casual goers, but thriller fans should be able to enjoy this sci-fi gem in the month of July.
