The Tribe

One of the more intriguing and most interesting films we’ve ever came across, is The Tribe. The powerful coming-of-age film features no subtitles and no voice overs, which has been a huge indie feature over the last year – winning numerous awards. Nearly a year after its CANNES premiere, the Ukrainian drama film Hryhoriy Fesenko, Yana Novikova and Roza Babiy finally sees its stateside release.

Centering on an entire collective of teens who are deaf, a young shy boy arrives on campus and struggles to fit into the boarding school system. The Mafiosi-influenced group doesn’t allow Sergey into their gang initially, but him proving his loyalty through acts of crime allows him into their hierarchy.

Coincidentally, he finds himself in love with one of the gang’s escorts, which causes a conflict of interest with all parties involved. If you do not suffer from A.D.D. and can keep focus for this 130-minute gem, then this is one you can’t pass up. Unfortunately, with an unrecognizable cast, this one may get overlooked.
