Belle
Starring the lovely Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tom Wilkinson and Miranda Richardson among others, British drama film Belle centers on a very delicate issue plaguing not only America, but the entire world (see: Los Angeles Clippers owner). Gugu takes the role of young Dido Elizabeth Belle, who is a mixed-race illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy officer and lands in England with her father’s brother to be raised.
Set in the 18th century, where slavery is still an ongoing issue, Belle’s uncle (Lord Mansfield), who’s also the Lord Chief Justice in England, raises her to early adulthood. In the midst of deliberating a case for slavery to advance the movement of Abolitionism, Belle is currently in a relationship with a young lawyer that doesn’t meet the approval of her uncle at the time. Although the film is missing some A-list actors or a movie franchise in comparison to what’s out right now, Belle should offer enough storyline and superb acting to draw in a decent audience.
