The Storyline Was Everywhere & Made No Sense
Above anything else, the storyline was the most disrespectful thing of the entire movie. The film started off showing a youthful Detroit girl with aspirations of becoming a singer, dancer and actor; but things felt rushed the entire film (including her music at times). Instead of showing more of her journey into becoming a songstress, she randomly ends up in R. Kelly’s studio and develops an instant relationship after some pizza.
“I’m married to R. Kelly and there’s nothing you can do about it” – Aaliyah
“You’re grounded!” Parents
“I Hate You” – Aaliyah
That nigga look like everybody but r kelly

We would hope the so-called biopic focused on her career more, but it was more less an exploitation at her relationships with both Kellz and Dame Dash. With 90-minutes well into the project, we had only found out that she was originally from New York and randomly met Damon at a generic Roc-A-Fella party (we’re assuming the “Hey Papi” set); which was also false in their real life meeting. One scene would show her meeting Timothy and Misdemeanor in ’96, then we would instantly fast forward to 2000 where she landed a Matrix role.
