True Detective “Who Goes There” Recap

whogoesthere

After the last episode ended with one of the biggest breaks in the case, along with seeing a mysteriously masked figure for the first time, this week’s airing of True Detective might be the most anticipated yet. Despite Martin Hart (Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (McConaughey) preferring to settle on their differences since the series first began, it seems the two have finally come to terms with each other, but that doesn’t suggest matters in their personal life are any better. At this point, the entire story has now become pretty confusing, and could easily generate several opinions through different perceptions. We’re still unsure on whether both characters are speaking truth on camera in the present day, or whether mind games are occurring.

OS REWIND: True Detective “The Locked Room” Recap

The new episode kicks off with the pair interrogating Charlie Lange in a prison cell, who provides information on former cell mate Reggie Ladoux, describing him as a creep and claiming he had access to pictures of Dora Kelly and information through general chats. Charlie mentions that Reggie’s a meth cook and curiously has the spiral on his back that we’ve seen in previous episodes, and often discussed a place down South where rich people used to devil worship and sacrifice kids. Tyrone Weems immediately becomes part of the investigation, who was associated with Reggie and could possibly have information on where he might be located.

During a separate court hearing, Hart happens to come in contact with Lisa for the first time since pushing into her home and harassing a friend. Disgusted with his behavior, Lisa then visits Maggie and informs her of their ongoing affair. At this point, Hart looks for information at a strip club in search of Weems’ partner and more information on where to find him. Hart then follows her to a warehouse party to find Weems, who eventually tells him that Reggie stopped selling and only cooks for one bike gang in bulk order. Upon coming home and finding bags packed, Hart then visits Maggie at the hospital and causes a scene, leaving Cohle to arrive in order to get his head straight and focus on the job. Upon their breakup, Hart moves in with Cohle and their next task is to visit the base of the bike gang, Iron Crusaders, and it just so happens that Cohle became part of their crew some time ago while going undercover.

After using the story of his father having Leukemia to gain time out, Cohle then links up with Hart to take on the investigation into the bike gang, which takes place off police record for the first time in the series. Cohle chooses to take a solo route into the situation, and meets with a former associate to bribe him into a huge drug deal which could earn him money, but is all a lie. The twist here is that Cohle must take part in a robbery to prove he’s still worthy, which later turns into a dangerous shootout, leaving him to make his own way out of the neighbourhood to stay safe. The enticing scene is no doubt assisted by a long tracking shot of Cohle, and he eventually evades the scene still high from taking drugs, along with the man he needs by his side. Hart is there to swiftly drive away from the scene, and the final shot shows a chaotic street filled with residents and police handling the situation.
