Does weed really cure cancer?
Stoned Kids isn’t a new subject for VICE, but they’re revisiting it for the launch of Weediquette on VICELAND. Host Krishna Andavolu travels to Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles to visit with various families and doctors to find out the likelihood of cannabis helping cure the side effects of cancer and maybe even cancer itself.
In Oregon, he visits with a mother who found out her daughter had leukemia. After starting chemotherapy and being told her daughter would have a 30% chance of survival, she decided to try the unproven method of giving her high dosage THC oil to help the pain. Turns out, it has vastly helped her daughter in her battle with cancer.
But is it the ethical thing to do?
Krishna visited numerous families going through the same dilemma and he even had his own reservations about kids taking highly potent oil, because of the long term side effects it could have (his wife made a case that they’re not looking at the long term when they’re just trying to make it through the day/month/year). He actually tried one tenth of the dosage some of these children take and he ended up completely disoriented. He couldn’t even begin to fathom what it would feel like to be 10 times more high, like the children.
Although research has not yet discovered a link between THC oil and curing cancer, one thing all the parents said was that it’s been helping their children. Even ones that don’t consume marijuana on a regular basis, will attest to the positive effects it’s had on their kid’s cancer.
