Swear to god it sounds like we’ve posted about this numerous times, with nothing but crickets to show for it. Now, 20 years following the passing of Aaliyah, her music is actually going to see the light of day.
Blackground Records was teasing a big announcement recently and now news of her music coming to streaming services has been confirmed.
In a partnership with EMPIRE, the Blackground catalog will be available online starting on August 20. This includes releases from Timbaland & Magoo, Tank, Toni Braxton, JoJo, and the Romeo Must Die soundtrack. Posthumous Aaliyah compilations will also make their way to your favorite digital platform as well. In total, 17 albums will arrive over the span of the next two months.
Here’s what Barry Hankerson had to say about the news:
“Since the death of my niece, I don’t have the same relationship I used to have with my sister,” he said. “We were very close when we grew up. I don’t know if anybody can imagine, but when you lose a child, or a niece that you really loved, it was difficult for my family. So a lot of things in my family changed.
I’m prayerful that she supports what we’re doing, but at the end of the day we’ll all find out [whether she supports the deal] probably at the same time. I miss her and I love her. I wish we had the same relationship that we had years ago. I love my sister.”
