The Spotify and TIDAL competition has arrived
Over the last two years, Apple has been rebranding their music service with original video content and even phasing out iTunes. However, with competitors Tidal and Spotify leading the pack for the podcast game, Apple is looking to invest in podcasts.
This week, Bloomberg revealed that the company reached out to multiple major media companies to discuss original content for their podcast app. While Apple hasn’t addressed their imminent plans, this will mark the first time ever that the company will directly fund and distribute podcasts through their music app.
Considering Spotify is already spending $500 million this year on exclusive podcast shows, we’re of the assumption that number will be extremely large on Apple. In the past, users have been able to upload their own shows through Apple’s RSS podcast feed.
However, with the company throwing out big bucks, most might be enticed to join them on an exclusive agreement, as opposed to having their content distributed on other platforms.
Considering Apple TV Plus and Apple Arcade are both coming this fall, the new exclusive podcast plan could be part of a bigger plan they have in store.
Look for details from Apple on this topic to emerge later this year.
