Nearly 3 nights since Beyoncé shocked the world releasing her fifth studio self-titled album, the project has now sold over 828,773 copies worldwide according to Columbia Records. The album’s now on its way to pass the year’s biggest opening week being Justin Timberlake’s comeback The 20/20 Experience album, which sold over 968,000 its opening week.
Bey’s album will obviously surpass those numbers (if it hasn’t already) well over a million before her first week conclude. This is now her biggest opening week to date, as she’s also broken the United States iTunes record for highest one-week sales, previously held by Taylor Swift’s RED album released back in 2012. Target came out today saying they would not carry Beyonce’s new album, due to potential supply and demand issues. Company pokesperson Erica Julkowski spoke with Billboard saying,
At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections. While there are many aspects that contribute to our approach and we have appreciated partnering with Beyonce in the past, we are primarily focused on offering CDs that will be available in a physical format at the same time as all other formats. At this time, Target will not be carrying Beyonce’s new self-titled album ‘Beyonce.
Most retailers can expect physical copies of the album to arrive this Friday, December 20th; as iTunes has exclusivity rights until December 18th. Target previously worked with B on her 4 album in 2011; which featured six exclusive tracks, along with a special TV commercial. We’re assuming Target caught some feelings with the iTunes only release of the album. Their loss will definitely be WalMart’s gain, especially in the heart of the holiday season.
