Black Thought Talks Losing His Mom as a Teenager, Early Doubts About The Roots

Black Thought is getting ready to release Streams of Thought Vol. 1, his new collaborative project with 9th Wonder and The Soul Council, tomorrow. Before it drops, the Philly rapper sat down with NPR Music’s Rodney Carmichael for a rare 35-minute interview.

In it, Thought talks about his dad’s connections to the Black Mafia, losing his mom as a teenager, early doubts about The Roots, the response to his Hot 97 freestyle, being mistaken for Rick Ross and much more. “The art of lyricism is now in its greatest decline,” he says. “That’s why it’s like, somebody comes out and you drop some bars of substance, it’s like it’s amazing. It’s like a unicorn.”
