Detroit. Once a city thought to rival with the capital of the world, now has become a city whose name has been tarnished with corruption, poverty, crime and has seemingly become the bud of all dinner table jokes. The city that once held the fourth largest population in the U.S., but now has been deemed to be in such a state of emergency that the State of Michigan was called forward to step in and take charge. A public sector with more than $14 billion in debt has seen it’s population shrink to nearly half the size it once was, must seek change from outsiders.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder aims to reshape the city, a change New York City saw in the 1970’s during it’s own financial crisis, but the City of Detroit appears to want no help. It has become a move that has caused much protest and dispute. The recent slogan, ‘Detroit vs. Everybody’ seems all too real. A blessing in disguise maybe, as it appears Detroit has regained a new sense of loyalty within the city. Detroit has banded together to stand on it’s own two as it always has. Has Detroit reached a point of no return?
The product of Detroit begs to differ. With people grasping to the idea of finally ridding themselves of the turmoil, they turn to the music. And as many artists have successfully made names for themselves and cemented themselves as ‘Detroit Made’, we thought it was only right to showcase some artists you may have overlooked. Some names you may have already known, some we think you have not. Though the artists are all different, the message is the same: Detroit won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
