Kid Cudi has been releasing music for a decade, but not many of his tracks will have the same impact as “Pursuit of Happiness.” E.VAX aka Evan Mast, who is one half of song’s producer duo Ratatat, sat down with Genius to break down the record.
“My road to producing started with ‘Pursuit of Happiness,'” E.VAX says in the clip, followed by explaining how he linked up with Cudi and deconstructing the beat itself. “Cudi’s become this real mythical character for people of a certain age because he was just speaking frankly on his tracks in a way that nobody was used to hearing rappers speak,” he says
As well as “Pursuit of Happiness,” Evan has also worked with Cudi on “Alive (Nightmare)” and Kids See Ghosts tracks “Feel the Love,” “Fire” and “Reborn.”
