Frank Ocean Was Released From His Def Jam Contract Early

Frank Ocean set the music world on fire with the release of Endless and BLONDE. One was a visual album that most people watched little by little as he crafted a staircase, while the other one was all-new music that seemed like the “real” album after the fact.

Then people noticed BLONDE was actually not released on Def Jam, but rather independently and reports ran about the fact that Ocean fulfilled his contractual obligations with the label.

It turns out that wasn’t so much the case.

An inside source told the Associated Press that Def Jam released Frank from his contract early because of the bad relationship between them. They even went as far as to describe the two sides as a “bad marriage.” Apparently, Ocean didn’t want to be on a label and wanted to do things on his own. It is not clear how many more albums the singer owed, but it doesn’t even matter.

Frank is free.
