As much as Frank Ocean‘s Blonde album was critically acclaimed and well-received, one accolade he doesn’t want to carry with him through the new year: The GRAMMYs.
In talking to the New York Times, Frank opened up about how feels on the award show, why he’s letting his album boycott and what happened in his tenure over at Def Jam.
“That institution certainly has nostalgic importance. It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.
I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience.”
On Def Jam, Ocean mentioned the fact he had to buy himself out of the deal and the fact they shelved him, it wasn’t until he took things into his own hands that he started seeing success. The bad part? The label wasn’t letting him eat like he though he should be eating. That’s why now he’s taken the power back and is on his Master P shit, without having to depend on radio or having big first week sales.
