Kanye West Cannot Retire According to His Publishing Deal

We will never ever get a retirement from Kanye West. At least not any time in the foreseeable future. Not because he would one day want to bow out of the game and concentrate on his family or just simply enjoy life, but because his EMI Music Publishing deal will not allow him to do so.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he is forbidden to not work:

“You (Mr. West) hereby represent and warrant that to [EMI] that you will, throughout the term as extended by this modification, remain actively involved in writing, recording and producing Compositions and Major Label Albums, as your principle occupation. At no time during the term will you seek to retire as a songwriter, recording artist or producer or take any extended hiatus during which you are not actively pursuing your musical career in the same basic manner as you have pursued such career to date (The preceding representation shall not be deemed to prevent you from taking a vacation of limited duration.)”

It all took place when Yeezy filed a lawsuit against EMI and Roc-A-Fella Records so he could “obtain his freedom” from the record label and publishing contracts.

West is currently looking to sign new deals with other labels and publishers saying that EMI has made profits from his work for millions of dollars unjustly. He cites California Labor Code section 2855 that says personal service contracts should only last seven years, when he’s been under the deal for twice that amount of time. If he can win the case, he wants ownership of compositions he’s already released, dating back to October 2010 (the date of which the original deal should have been terminated according to the labor code).

In related news, Kim Kardashian posted some Sunday Service covers of Soul II Soul and SWV yesterday that were pretty dope.
