K. dot and label facing lawsuit for not licensing photographer’s image

Kendrick Lamar‘s second studio album To Pimp A Butterfly has garnered critical acclaim since it released back in March. The album has received both good and bad responses, but that hasn’t stopped the Compton rapper from delivering quality material in support of the effort. Though this doesn’t necessarily involve the album, it does involve one of the its singles that was released in promotion for the project.

Namely “The Blacker The Berry” and the artwork in which was used for it. As it turns out, the photographer of the photo, Giordano Cipriani, says that the image used for the single’s artwork, was done so without his permission and has now taken legal action. Filing a lawsuit against Kendrick (along with Top Dawg Entertainment, Interscope, and Aftermath), where he’s seeking $150,000 in damages for every time the photograph was used. He also want’s Kendrick to cover his legal fees as well.

The image in question, captured by Cipriani during his excursion in Africa, depicts a mother of the “Mursi Tribe” breastfeeding her two children.
