If you picked up a physical copy of Michael Jackson‘s latest posthumous album XSCAPE, then you also received the documentary that came along with it. For those of you who didn’t bother getting the album since you already purchased it digitally, here’s your chance to see in it’s entirety.
In the 25-minute documentary that was released as apart of the XSCAPE album deluxe package, we see the albums production team Stargate, Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins and the man who brought them all together, L.A. Reid, sharing stories of how or when they first heard Michael Jackson, what their initial reaction was when L.A. gave them a call to be apart of the project and what MJ meant to them and their careers, and music as a whole.
First, we are taken in to the studio as they each breakdown the records they contributed to the album. With Timbaland holding down most of the album’s production, L.A. and Timbo hit the lab and play the original demo versions of the songs, then the new album versions, all while Tim broke down the process of how he approached each song.
The two are later joined by Rodney Jerkins, who had previously worked with MJ on the original version of the album’s title track and shares a conversation he had with Michael about better ways to dig deeper into his music and come up with the best possible outcome. Ultimately, that became the album version of “Xscape.”
Reid is later joined by Stargate, who took on Michael’s “A Place With No Name.” The production duo speak on how they were first skeptical about joining in on the project following L.A.’s request, but later changed their mind after hearing the song. While in the studio, they give us a complete break down of the song and show everything that was added it. Finishing out the studio segment Timbaland and Jerkins talk about “Chicago” and “Do You Know Where Your Children Are” and how much MJ would’ve enjoying hearing them.

Being the four contributors who had actually co-wrote and previously worked with Michael on past songs like “Loving You,” “Love Never Felt So Good,” “Chicago,” and “Blue Gangsta,” Paul Anka, Dr. Freeze, Matt Forger and Cory Rooney are later interviewed and talk about the experiences they shared with MJ when in the studio with him. They explain how he created music from random objects around the room to find different sounds to add, amongst other things.
Closing out the documentary, Timbaland, Reid and Jerkins discuss how they were all chosen to preserve his greatness by putting together nothing but great material and make sure that his music will go down as some of the best music of our time.
This is a must watch for all Michael Jackson fans.
