Essential Listening: What The Price

Migos finally put it all together. The catchy hooks, the fire verses, the double time flows, the amazing ad-libs, and everything else that make them such a dynamic group. It finally all came together on their new album Culture.

Propelled by the massive hit single “Bad and Boujee” they rode that wave right into a number 1 song on the charts, and a number 1 album as well. There are a lot of factors that can be accredited to them going number 1 with this album such as, “Bad and Boujee,” Childish Gambino’s “Bad and Boujee” shoutout, Quavo’s 3rd and 4th quarter feature run, or simply the timing was right for the trio. Whatever it is, it hit and it stuck.

Culture is such a great album, that even the hit songs aren’t to be skipped when playing it. Yes, I don’t skip “Bad and Boujee,” “Call Casting,” or “T-Shirt,” when spinning Culture. To be honest outside of “Bad and Boujee” the other two songs aren’t even on the level of the rest of the songs on the album, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. They finally figured out quality over quantity, and Culture clocks in at a short 13 songs. It’s perfect. No filler tracks, no unesscessary skits, none of that. They don’t go get a ton of features, instead opting for 3, that all work in their favor.

No member outshines another on the album either. They all have their moments respectively throughout. Quavo’s hook on “What The Price,” Takeoff on “Slippery” or Offset on “Brown Paper Bag” where they all shined to be honest. The production is perfect as well. Zaytoven lends them some gems in the form of “Big on Big” and “Brown Paper Bag,” and Cardo gives them a theatrical backdrop for “Deadz” that features 2 Chainz.

If you thought Migos wouldn’t figure the album format out, Culture shows you that they can pull it off. Even with the few missteps, DJ Khaled on the Intro, 2 Chainz verse on “Deadz” and the song “Ass” Migos shine. They have finally arrived as a group cut out for mainstream rap and they can thank Culture for that.
