YG “Red Friday”
Released: November 25th, 2016
Must Listen: I’m A Thug Pt. 2
YG said he would paint Black Friday red, and that’s exactly what he did when the time came. He also sold the project for $100 through Nip Hussles #proud2pay campaign while he was at it. The mixtape was a short one, only clocking in at 8 songs, but that isn’t the big story.
The best part about Red Friday is the return of YG and DJ Mustard. YG sounds more at home than ever on the Mustard beats and it shows. One of the standout cuts is “Down Bitch,” which finds YG rapping about looking for a down woman, and he floats all over the Mustard production. 21 Savage who is all over the guest appearances right now lands on here and manages to outshine YG in the process on “I Be On.” Other than that it’s all 10 Summer/400 Records artists with Mitch and RJ both featuring as well.
Red Friday is short and sweet and that’s exactly what YG was looking to do with the tape. Shortly after it dropped, he announced Just Re’d Up 3 is on the way, a mixtape series that’s home to some classic YG cuts. With Mustard back in his corner that will be a special project for him. Until then, we’re going to keep spinning Red Friday.
