The Weeknd “Starboy”
Released: November 25th, 2016
Must Listen: Reminder
Before Starboy dropped, Weeknd said this album was the best music he’d ever made. Weeknd has a few classics under his belt so him saying that was a pretty big deal. After dropping the first single “Starboy,” which shot up the charts it was clear Weeknd was onto something. In the coming weeks we got a few more songs, videos, tracklist cover and even a interview from The Weeknd. On November 25th, he delivered Starboy and boy did he deliver.
While Starboy is at times all over the place it doesn’t really matter because at the end of the day it’s all great music. He has a few pop hits, a few slow burners, and a few where he gets really Weeknd-ish and sings about women and drugs as he loves too. Upon the first listen the cut that jumps out the most is easily “Reminder.” He sings “I just won a new award for a kids show/Talking ’bout a face numbing off a bag of blow/I’m like goddamn bitch I am not a Teen Choice/Goddamn, bitch, I am not a beach boy.” Just like that he lets everybody know that he hasn’t changed and he’s still that guy from House Of Balloons that made us love him.
At 18 tracks long there is something for everybody on the album. He enlists only a few artists to help him out on the album, which are Future, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey & Daft Punk. All the features fit perfect into what he’s trying to correct and Weeknd comes out as winner in all tracks with his guests. He had a few missteps but not many, and for that Starboy will be getting heavy play from us all month.
