It is my pleasure to welcome you all to Real Men DON’T Cry!!!! As many of you may or may not know OnSmash.com has been a champion of my debut album Don’t Quit Your Day Job and has helped me re-establish “Consequence” as a brand. Hof & I speak frequently and in one of our conversations we thought it would be a dope idea for me to ‘drop a couple of jewels’ on the route I took to self promote the Day Job LP.

So essentially this column has been designed to serve as a self-help guide for signed & unsigned artists alike who are trying to figure out how to promote their artistry regardless of whatever their circumstances are. Too many times we see via Internet sites or tabloids, artists venting their frustration that a label isn’t adequately promoting their project. That’s what I like to call The Crying Game. They think by putting the label on blast it will cause them to shift gears and pay more attention to their project. I’ve learned from experience that this is a waste of time. Frankly you come off as a “disgruntle employee.” Here’s something you must bare in mind – the life span of an artist is very short. There are exceptions to the rule but as a whole most artist are active for no more than 5 years. So you need to first figure out, Why Are You In This Game?

  • Is it to get RICH?
  • Is it to make HITS?
  • Or make HISTORY?

All are great motives but you have to be realistic about the path you choose. As long as I’m in charge of this editorial, I’ma shoot it to you REAL. An artist is the most disposable component of the Music Business. Of course without ARTISTS there would be no product BUT anytime you have a surplus of any product that gives consumers & industry the option to CHOOSE unless you work yourself into a space where you become NECESSARY. There are very few artists who are in this space but once you’re there it now becomes the consumer making a demand for your music. Even still there are many more components involved in SELLING RECORDS.

Over the course of the next few weeks we will examine the many aspects that effect artists getting a release date, servicing a single/video, being signed to an artist, promoting on the Internet and just getting “HOT”. Every column you read will be accompanied by a video of me explaining the topic we touched on. I am very excited about this column and hope it helps artists avoid some of the pitfalls that are lying in-wait for ALL artists.

So check here every Wednesday for the written column and the video footage will be posted the following Monday. For all the latest Consequence info go to my blog!!!!
