Terrace Martin, Tae Beast & Sounwave Break Down “To Pimp A Butterfly”

Out The Coocoon

While we all continue stomaching Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp A Butterfly album and finding new instruments, lyrics and messages throughout it, some of the collaborators on the boards have come together and talked to REVOLT TV about the making of the album.

While the producers are usually kept in the background, they actually know K Dot the best and describe what he was going through that inspired the making of his latest album. In this mini documentary, Terrace Martin, Tae Beast, Sounwave and Ali talk about how much Kendrick’s trip to Africa changed the course of the album and how different he was when he came back home.

They also break down a good portion of the tracks and where/when they were constructed, what elements came together for them and they even revealed there were multiple versions of some tracks, because each mix was different. For example, the original “King Kunta” was way too jazzy for Kendrick’s liking so he had the producers flip a single part of the beat into a loop. Terrace Martin even said the song is like paying homage to DJ Quik and Mausberg, two West Coast OG’s that started that sound.

Check out the 23 minute clip above and learn more about what could be called Album Of The Year when it’s all said and done.
