The reign of Ja Rule on the Billboard charts is far back enough that youngsters nowadays might not even remember, but he had a stronghold on the Hot 100 for a minute. But how it all come about? It really started with “Put It On Me,” as he carried that formula to multiple hit singles across his career. But it wasn’t all good for him when he made a left turn from street to radio friendly.
As you will learn from Magnum Opus, Ja Rule had to fight back with Def Jam to put out the breakout album Rule 3:36, which was a complete 180 from his debut Venni Vetti Vecci. In the documentary, you can hear how Ja got his start (through JAY Z’s “Can I Get A…”), how Irv Gotti put his foot down against Lyor Cohen and Kevin Lyles and who “Put It On Me” was dedicated to.
