Vintage Video of ‘Yo! MTV Raps’ Boycotting the GRAMMYs

Will Smith & others open up on the hip-hop GRAMMY ban of ’89

Over the years, Hip-Hop and the GRAMMYs have always had a shaky relationship dating back to the genre’s mainstream presences in the late 1980s. MTV even started their own yearly event on their platform, with the annual Video Music Awards – which many of the youths look forward to more than even the GRAMMY night.

With music’s biggest night set to take place on Sunday, MTV gives us history lesson and look back on how rap music wasn’t welcomed in the ceremony initially, with Will Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Salt-N-Pepa and Kool Moe Dee all voicing their displeasure with the Grammy committee.
