There’s always a need of a powerful or productive bat in your lineup. You can’t always leave it up to chance that your pitcher, who is probably a good hitter at times, to be at the plate when you need that spot for a guy to get on base during the right moments. Yes, you can always substitute a guy from off the bench, but you’re taking your pitcher out of the game. Though you may have one of the best bullpens in the league, if your starter is untouchable, you want to keep him in as long as you can, because not every bullpen is reliable in key situations.
