Six Mariners Pitchers Throw Combined Ho-Hitter Vs. Dodgers
Friday night at Safeco Field, Kevin Millwood and five Seattle Mariners’ relievers combined to no-hit the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 1-0 win. Veteran pitcher, Kevin Millwood pitched 6 hitless innings but lost the perfect game by giving up a walk Juan Rivera. By the 7th inning with only 68 total pitches thrown by Millwood, the solo no-hitter was still intact. As he approached the mound and started throwing a few warm-up pitches before the 7th inning was set to begin, he felt a twinge in his grown. Coaches and trainers immediately pulled Millwood from the game and would later announce he sustained a mild right groin strain ending his dreams of what every MLB pitcher wants to accomplish in their career. Not to be discouraged with Millwood leaving the game, the Mariners bullpen would still carry on the team no-hit bid with 5 reliever pitchers to prevent the Dodgers from getting a hit in this historic game. In the 9th with Tom Wilhelmsen would retire Andre Ethier on a routine grounder to end the game and complete the team no-hitter.
This comes as a surprise to the baseball world having one of the worst pitching teams in the majors’ no-hitting one of the best hitting teams in majors. So far this year Jered Waver of the Angels, Johan Santana of the Mets and Philip Humber of the Whitesox have all thrown no hitters marking this the fourth of the majors with still the second of the season to be played. This was also the 10th combined no-hitter ever in league history and the first since the Houston Astros accomplished one against the New York Yankees back in 2003 with Roy Oswalt also leaving the game with a strained groin. This marked the Mariners first no-hitter since Chris Bosio April of 1993 against the Boston Redsox.
