Baseball Tonight Spotlight: “Umpires Gone Wild” As Botched Call Gets Cardinals Victory

Keep It Classy, Atlanta. Cardinals Win First Ever Wild-Card Playoff Game.

Friday night, just like myself, the fans of Atlanta would get fucked; but on a bad call from the umpires. For the potential farewell game for Chipper Jones, the Braves were host to the first ever Wild-Card playoff game as they played the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. Fast-forwarding to the 2nd inning, second baseman Dan Uggla would get walked and immediately followed by catcher David Ross hitting a 416 homer to center to give the Braves a 2-0 lead hopefully setting the tone for the game.

In the top of 4th, St. Louis would finally get some run production as Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday would get back to back singles putting themselves in scoring position. Allen Craig would double to left bringing in Carlos Beltran followed by Yadier Molina grounding to second with Matt Holliday scoring. David Freese would sac-fly to center to bring in Allen Craig as St. Louis got their first lead of the game. In the top of the 6th Matt Holliday would homer to left to put the store at 4-2 with proceeding in the 7th inning as Pete Kozma would hit a grounder to shortstop bringing in Adron Chambers. Matt Carpenter would then single to bring in Pete Kozma putting the score at 6-2.

Skipping to the bottom of the 7th, Jose Constanza would triple to right center as Michael Bourn would ground to second brining in Constanza to put the game at 6-3 which would be their last score of the game and the year. In the bottom of the 8th, here’s where things got shady. Dan Uggla and David Ross would both single to put the game tying run at the plate. Andrelton Simmons would hit a pop up to short stop that was called infield fly rule by an umpire as two Cardinals outfielders lost the ball in the lights with the ball dropping right by them. Without the call, the bases could’ve been loaded with the Cardinals potentially taking the lead.

Bud Selig and the MLB wanted excitement and they certainly got it; but not the type they wanted. St. Louis now plays host to Washington Nationals on Sunday at 3:00pm on TBS for game 1 of their NL divisional series.
