Lakers Fire Byron Scott After 2 Seasons in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Lakers woes on the court may not be over, but the Byron Scott era has surely ended. After posting the worst record in the history of the franchise (17-65), the organization has decided not to pick up his team option for next season, officially ending his tenure as head coach of the Lakers.

The top two coaches on the market, Tom Thibodeau and Scott Brooks, have already signed for greener pastures so it’ll be interesting to see where the Lakers move next. Luke Walton seems to be the name being thrown around as the top candidate, but others like Mark Jackson are still available.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and executive vice president Jim Buss plan to talk to Scott over lunch this week, to talk over their decision and officially part ways.

With Kobe Bryant retired and the team on the search for their next head coach, there are more questions than answers for Los Angeles heading into next season.

If the Lakers can find the luck to land the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft and secure a solid coach to develop the young talent the way Coach Scott couldn’t, things can look better in Lakerland in a season or two. They also have to secure some solid free agents in the upcoming seasons and not strike out like they have during the last year’s of Kobe’s career. But these next moves are crucial to making that happen.
