The jury is out on whether this is just a temporary fix or a move for the long haul.
After months of searching, the quest has finally ended. The Los Angeles Lakers have hired Byron Scott as their head coach after striking a 4-year deal worth a reported $17 million. This comes only days after the Lakers offered him the position and now end the streak of the being the last team in the NBA without a coach.
Byron Scott comes into the organization after Kobe Bryant endorsed him on the team and knows exactly what the team needs in the immediate future. As a former Laker during the “Showtime” era squad, Byron Scott knows the organization well.
Los Angeles holds a team option for the last year of the deal, in case things go south and they need a replacement, after Kobe’s imminent retirement.
The Lakers wanted to do things different this time around, as far as a coach hiring, and waited until they put the team together before hiring a candidate. Scott was the front-runner since Mike D’Antoni’s resignation and will be looking to start the rebuilding process in L.A., coming off the worst season in franchise history.
