As Hurricane Sandy tore through the east coast, Mayor Bloomberg postponed one of the most anticipated games of the season this year for the Brooklyn Nets season opener against cross-town rival New York Knicks. Tonight we will finally see the long-awaited “real opener” for the Nets we’ve been waiting for all year (decade) long.

Both teams had an interesting off-season where the Nets were in the waiting for Dwight Howard but kept intact their current team starting off with the re-signing of Deron Williams to a multi-year contract as well as the acquisitions of both Joe Johnson & Gerald Wallace. The Knicks improved their bench and role players with acquiring Jason Kidd, Raymond Felton, Ronnie Brewer, Kurt Thomas, Marcus Camby and our beloved Rasheed Wallace.
Carmelo Anthony’s been an MVP candidate this year averaging 25 points a game behind only Kobe & Durant as they’re currently in second place in the east behind the Miami Heat. After Friday’s blowout loss to the Houston Rockets which Jeremy Lin got one-upped his former team caused many to begin to speculate that team needed Amar’e Stoudemire’s services after being exposed as their shots didn’t fall down from outside.
The Knicks are more championship built than the Nets right now just strictly on their experience as they could possibly be a sleeper team in the East this year if Amar’e and Melo are both motivated to play defense this year along with the return of Iman Shumpert. For the Nets this year, Brook Lopez has been coming of age into a “true bigman” as most fans of the Nets have only looked at Dwight Howard as an afterthought after seeing his play so far this year.
If these two teams had played opening week, the Nets arguably could’ve been blown out but not as much now in our opinion as Brooklyn have been building chemistry and confidence thus far. The Knicks are still the team of the City but many fans may be jumping ship, possibly our good friends in Kings and Long Island counties if the Nets can pull away with the dub tonight.
