According to multiple NBA league sources (Chris Broussard™), The Hornets will become “Pelicans” in 13-14 season.
Yes, you’re reading this right. Next season, the New Orleans Saints Tom Benson, who took over reigns as the new Hornets owner on April 14th, will be changing the name of the team to “Pelicans” at the conclusion of this season. The Franchise was formerly Charlotte Hornets moving to New Orleans a decade ago (in 2002) changing only the city name, but new management is now wanting to change the entire franchise name.
The Pelican name derives from an old New Orleans baseball team and is also the Louisiana state bird. A few months after winning last year’s NBA Draft, selecting new franchise player Anthony Davis, it’s going to take “some time” for the fans of the NOLA to adjust to this new name.
Bobcats owner and fashion icon Michael Jordan has been looking for a name change and we wouldn’t be surprised if they went back to the old “Hornets” name in due time.
