Rudy Gay Signs Two-Year Deal with San Antonio Spurs

Pop gets help for the Warriors next May. . .

This summer, Rudy Gay has been linked to various teams, in desperate need of a wing player. The now 30-year-old player, had an amazing season last year, averaging 18 points and 6 rebounds an outing with the Sacramento Kings. However, with the team looking for a fresh rebuild, bringing in a new locker room; Gay decided to look elsewhere and found the second-best home available.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN confirmed that Rudy has agreed to a new a 2-year deal, worth $17 million, with the San Antonio Spurs. We think the move was solely done to combat the mismatch threat posed by Draymond Green or Kevin Durant at the four. It was evident during their 4-0 series sweep loss a few weeks ago, that they needed lengthy perimeter help.

He also has a player option set for his third season, coming off a season-ending surgery just earlier this year. Gay surprisingly opted out of his deal with the Kings, which would’ve made him $14 million for next season alone. But, with prime years coming to an end and health still remaining a question; Rudy is looking to complete his career with a possible championship.

Although the team hasn’t addressed the future of their backcourt, with Tony Parker coming back from a quadriceps injury last May, the team has arguably the best 6th man available this summer.

Gregg Popovich will quickly incorporate Rudy into getting proper season rest at the age of 31, which could enhance his career longevity in the move to Texas. It’s unclear if the team is still bringing back Pau Gasol, as well as LaMarcus Aldridge reportedly wanting out; but they now have a solidified piece to combat the tactics seen by the World Champion, Golden State Warriors.
