Spring Cleaning, Magic Relieve Stan Van Gundy & Otis Smith Of Their Duties In Orlando

This comes as no surprise to the sports world as the Orlando Magic today parted ways with head coach Stan Van Gundy and GM Otis Smith. Early last month, Van Gundy came public and stated top-ranking team officials told him that Dwight Howard asked for management to fire him if the team wanted to secure their Star in a long-term contract beyond 2013. Prior to taking over the Magic in 2007, Van Gundy was the coach of the Miami Heat and went 259-135 making the playoffs all 5 seasons in his tenure with Orlando including 3 southeast division titles and an NBA Finals appearance in 2009. Otis Smith also had been with the team prior to Van Gundy’s arrival and served as an assistant general manager and director of player development before taking over the reigns as President of Basketball Operations and General Manager. This move was done by the Magic to keep Dwight in Orlando but most of the basketball world expects him to eventually end up in Brooklyn paired with star point guard Deron Williams next year.
