Head Scratcher: Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics didn’t waste much time selecting point guard Marcus Smart with their sixth overall pick and although Smart is a strong, competitive guard that can score the ball easily, it is still a little mind boggling. With Rajon Rondo running your offense there doesn’t seem like much of a need (if any) in that area. Hopefully the Celtics plan on rotating Avery Bradley with Marcus Smart to give teams the two point guard look at times, because all three players do bring something completely different to the court.

Their next pick made a little bit more sense at the 17th spot, selecting Kentucky’s James Young. The 6-8 wingman is a very good shooter and proved that in his season with a stacked Wildcats roster averaging 14.8 PPG and dropping 20 in a losing effort against UCONN for the national title. This is a much better immediate fit versus drafting a point guard, because Young’s shooting will stretch the floor. No doubt playing with the pass first Rondo will help his transition into the league as well as his numbers.

Maybe Danny Ainge knows what he’s doing after all, but until we see it out on the court, we’re going to assume someone is getting traded.
