Did ‘NBA 2K’ Kill ‘NBA Live’ Competition with New $1.1 Billion Deal?

What the fuck, though?

A few days ago, The Wall Street Journal shared an exclusive report, that the NBA 2K’s publisher Take-Two Interactive had agreed to a 7-year extension with the NBA and NBPA, valued over $1.1 billion. While 2K Sports hasn’t addressed the deal, nor NBA Live announcing a partnership of their own; many are speculating that we’re on the verge of getting NFL Madden treatment for the NBA.

The new deal allows NBA 2K to continue using NBA branding and player likenesses, but doesn’t mention exclusive deals. In recent years, EA Sports has made strives in improving the pure gameplay for their NBA Live series, which has fell out of attention from the mainstream.

League Commissioner, Adam Silver issued a statement about the deal saying, “An entire generation of basketball fans engage and connect with NBA teams and players through NBA 2K. We are grateful to extend our partnership with Take-Two and the NBPA to build on the enormous popularity of the NBA 2K franchise and the continued global growth of basketball.”

Considering these big bucks have been spent, we’re curious what EA Sports would do if they indeed did lose their licensing deal to 2K Sports. Let us know in the comments what you think.
