Digital vs. Physical: A Look Into The Future Of Gaming

PlayStation 4 & Xbox One

Sometimes it’s an extreme hassle to wait in the long lines for gaming launches. Now with gamers having the ability to download a full 40-plus Gigabyte title 24 hours before its release on either the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live services, digital has become a reality (speaking of which, the first game we felt that digital gaming would be a standard in the near future for consoles users, was Titanfall). One of the biggest emphases on Xbox Live is the Skype-enabled party chat system, which keeps friends in-synch with game switching and the ability to hop into online matches instantly.

Playing the Titanfall beta last month and the ease of switching back and forth between NBA 2K14’s online team-up battles we partake in everyday; having a full game on your hard-drive without having to leave your chair every time for swap was extremely convenient. The problem with both consoles, however, is the mandatory installation’s we have to endure for nearly an hour after prior to initial play.

While the PlayStation 4 offers an manual upgrade of its internal hard-drive, the Xbox One does not currently offer any upgrade in memory space expansion. 500GBs would’ve been nice for the last generation of gaming, but with game sizes currently nearly 10% of the console’s memory, it’s going to be a while before the hardcore masses are ready to fully go digital; due to download wait time.
