Sony Adds 4K Video Support on PS4 Pro Media Player

Only .Mp4 content for now. . .

For those of you who’ve got their hands on a high-end PlayStation 4 Pro console, for HDR gaming, Sony adds a major addition to their Media Player app. With external hard-drive support recently added, 4K videos in .mp4 format are now playable through home server or USB stick.

Unfortunately, to combat piracy, Sony isn’t allowing gamers to save and play videos directly to consoles – which has been limited to just games and apps. While the update doesn’t include .mkv files, for our more advanced users, 4K content for its PS VR device will also be a key component we’ll be checking out as well. If converting and downloading media to .mp4 is too time consuming for ou casuals, streaming video apps like Netflix, Hulu and YouTube are all available in 4K.
