Where The Hell is “Fight Night” Next-Generation?

The Boxer has become the next extinct gem from EA Sports

Can you believe it’s been nearly five years since the last time we stepped in the ring for a new Fight Night video game? In the recent years, the sport of boxing lost its popularity among the casual fans, due to the dictatorship of Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions (probably the real blame) of not putting together proper events featuring elite fighters.

This became evident through significant share losses in pay-per-view purchases and the emergence of UFC having arguably the best monthly cards on paper among any combat sports.

We’re just really confused how Electronic Arts wouldn’t capitalize on preparing some form of the boxer last spring, when the two biggest fighters in the world had their eventful match-up.

As Floyd Mayweather Jr. looks to leave the ring for good, in his last fight ever next month against Andre Berto; the sport has many atheletes gaining recognition from not only the usual names like Andre Ward, Miguel Cotto, Deontay Wilder, Adrien Broner, Shawn Porter, Canelo Alvarez, Peter Quillin, Adonis Stevenson, Keith Thurman, Lucas Matthysse (to name a few) – but also international sensations like Gennady Golovkin, Wladimir Klitschko, Sergey Kovalev, and Carl Froch.

The boxing community and gamers in general are long-overdue a new knockout fighter in the virtual world, and right now would be the best time to reintroduce the series to fans.

EA Sports transitioned its focus to its UFC brand shortly after the final fight night; but with Ronda Rousey teasing early retirement due to the lack of competition, we’re not sure who will be able to hold the torch when the face of the octagon retires.

Much like how boxing has its future stars planned, Dana White is looking to do the same, as well as bringing in familiar faces for dream matches. Unfortunately for its obvious competition, with Al Haymon and his right hand man Floyd Mayweather Jr. cleaning up the sport for the first time ever with PBC, we just see the sport of boxing on the incline and MMA on the decline.

This isn’t due to the cards that are being presented, but its longstanding history in recent years of key fighters as the face of brand not being able to resist temptations of PEDs and/or drug usage. We would expect Electronic Arts to look back into its Fight Night series, rather sooner than later.

Let us know in the comments your thoughts on why EA Sports hasn’t released a new Fight Night.
