We can’t get enough of anything True Detective since the season finale on Sunday, but in between all the aftermath, this deleted scene from the HBO series brings a little more understanding to the character of Rust Cohle. We’re still trying to figure out where exactly this scene would fit (or was cut from) in the grand scheme of things, especially because Lori wasn’t seen much on the show.

As you’d know from watching the show, Rust had various visions and hallucinations of his daughter at random times. The guilt of him losing his daughter caused him to relive the tragedy over and over and it was part of the reason why he never dated, or why he worked so hard. To avoid thinking about it profusely.

Although Lori understood what happened in the past, according to this deleted scene, she still had a glimmer of hope that one day Rust would soften up and at least consider having kids again, especially since things were going so good with them. Ultimately, his demons and “philosophies” were too embedded in his brain to begin to crack that hard skull. He confesses to Lori that he doesn’t want to have kids with anyone, bursting her bubble and dreams of being a mother.

You can see why the two might have broken up after watching this.
