Chance the Rapper Talks Nearly Signing to Sony Music before ‘Acid Rap’

Art of Activism with Chance the Rapper

Following the release of his Coloring Book mixtape and a stand-out verse on Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo project a few months ago, Chance the Rapper has emerged as the biggest independent artist at the moment. A few days ago, Chano stopped by the University of Chicago to sit down with Bakari Kitwana for an Institute of Politics conversation, and briefly touch on his music career.

During 2012, when he was setting up for the release of his critically-acclaimed Acid Rap mixtape, Chance revealed that he was approached by various music labels and almost signed with Sony.

Towards the middle of a meeting with Sylvia Rhone and L.A. Reid for Sony’s subsidiary, Epic Records, Chano cited his dad calling him during the final stages of the meeting saying “Remember, don’t sign anything,” as the reason for his artistic freedom still in-tact.

Watch more from the hour-long interview, where he discusses the differences publishing and mastering rights, the background behind his album artwork and more.
