Dame Dash Sued by Roc-A-Fella For Selling Unauthorized NFT of ‘Reasonable Doubt’

The battle between Dame Dash and his former label Roc-A-Fella Records continues and both sides have come to a disagreement recently over an NFT.

Apparently, Dash tried to sell a non-fungible token containing ownership rights to the copyright for JAY Z‘s classic Reasonable Doubt album. The virtual auction was set to take place June 23-25 with the help of investor SuperFarm but things quickly came to a halt. Roc-A-Fella Records Inc. (now owned by Island Def Jam Music Group) are suing Dame, saying that he does not own the rights being sold.

They have also asked the court to stop him from any further attempts.

As of Monday, the Roc filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York even though the label claims Dash has refused to stop his efforts to sell.

Here’s what Dame had to say about the lawsuit:

“When another Black man calls another Black man a thief, just to make him look bad and so that they can devalue an asset that that other man owns, just because he won’t sell it to him at a low price, I don’t think the culture needs that. I just think it’s disappointing to also have a white lawyer calling me a thief on Juneteenth. It’s very representative of what they do to someone when they try to make a good guy look like a bad guy, just because he’s doing good business.”

He also said this to Page Six:

“He lying. That’s a whole lie. JAY owns one-third of Reasonable Doubt. They just said that I tried to sell an NFT of Reasonable Doubt and… it’s not true. I’m not running around to different places trying to auction off Reasonable Doubt. I’ve been working with one platform and that’s SuperFarm… And the thing is I own a third of Roc-A-Fella Records and I can sell my third if I feel like it.

JAY himself tried to buy my third and it was a crackhead deal. He offered me like I was Pookie or something from New Jack City.

That’s what corporate always does to the independent guy. It’s a case of corporate versus independent and how they try to bully me—but they are trying to bully the wrong one. It is the same fucking game. It just seems like they so mad if I get money. I don’t know why but why can’t I sell my third to who ever I want, whenever I want? I don’t have to ask.

[JAY Z] thinks Roc-A-Fella Records is his—it is ours—and he’s doing all this on Roc-A-Fella’s behalf. He don’t want nobody to eat but him. The real issue is (he has to) to compromise a man’s reputation for no reason… He’s got ‘only one man to eat’ syndrome and ‘everybody else got to work for him’ syndrome and ‘kiss the ring and we’re gonna mess up his reputation’ syndrome if you look under the hood. It continues to happen… It is fucked up for one black man to do that to another black man in front of all these people and whoever believes that shit is a sucker. I got a bridge I can sell you too.”

With the lawsuit, Roc-A-Fella is looking for a trial by jury, compensatory, nominal and punitive damages, the payment of legal fees and that Dash is prohibited to sell “any interest in Reasonable Doubt” moving forward.
