Deconstructed with T-Minus: The Making of J. Cole’s “Middle Child”

When “Middle Child,” we saw some people online say that they were disappointed with the production by T-Minus. Genius caught up with the Canadian producer to get the 411 about how exactly he produced that J. Cole record.

Interestingly, as he explained all of the elements on the beat, where he got the sample, the filters he put in each kick and snare, he came clean about some sounds you may have missed out on. There’s one that comes in only on the hook and sits very low to the production in the background. There’s one that you can only hear towards the end of the beat. There’s even a clap that layers on top of a hi-hat every so often while the song plays.

It’ll make you want to run the track back to hear the sounds he explained that you may not have caught the first few listens.

The video should also make you appreciate his work a little more.
